Joseph D. Williams, LICSW, LCSW-C, LCSW is a licensed clinical social worker, psychotherapist, and founder of Misunderstood Voices PLLC, a psychotherapy practice dedicated to helping individuals better understand themselves, their relationships, and the emotional patterns shaping their lives.

Originally from East Palo Alto, California, Joseph brings more than two decades of experience supporting individuals navigating anxiety, trauma, relationship challenges, identity development, and major life transitions. Throughout his career, he has developed a reputation for creating therapeutic spaces where people feel both seen and challenged — spaces where difficult truths can be explored with honesty, compassion, and accountability.
Much of Joseph’s work focuses on individuals who often appear strong, accomplished, or composed on the outside while privately struggling with emotional exhaustion, unresolved pain, complicated relationships, or a lingering sense that something in their lives no longer feels aligned. Through thoughtful dialogue and psychological insight, Joseph helps clients uncover the deeper patterns influencing their decisions, emotions, and relationships, empowering them to move forward with greater clarity and intention.

Joseph is also widely recognized as “The Misunderstood Social Worker,” a platform he created to foster honest and culturally relevant conversations about mental health, relationships, and personal growth. His candid storytelling and reflections on emotional life have resonated with thousands of viewers and have been featured in outlets such as Swerv Magazine.
Today, Joseph provides psychotherapy services to individuals located in Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, and Georgia, working with clients who are ready to engage in deeper self-reflection and meaningful personal change.

Joseph’s philosophy on healing remains grounded in a simple truth:
Real transformation begins when we stop avoiding the conversations we most need to have with ourselves.
Joseph D. Williams, LICSW, LCSW-C, LCSW- The Misunderstood Social Worker, "therapy is not about fixing people, but about helping them reclaim their voice, understand their story, and move forward with greater intention."
